The failed Titan expedition showed the enduring (and dangerous) allure of monuments and why we need to slow down and respect the very tributes that are meant to remind us of our humanity.
Beautifully written. As a kid my family visited Gettysburg & I found the picnic lunches on blankets in the grass a bit much after hearing of the numbers massacred there. Felt like we were in a cemetery, only worse. Had nightmares abut the place for weeks. The site of the Titanic is a graveyard. The King Tut exhibit strikes me much the same. These people went to so much trouble to be buried & now they’ve been dug up & what remains of their bodies are on exhibition. Feels so wrong to me.
