The Robots are Coming, is it Time for Humanity to Pivot?
This issue of Esoterica tackles themes on how we could re-imagine our world, for better or worse.
Dearest reader,
This inaugural edition of Esoterica mulls the idea of how we could live.
Most of us go through days, weeks, months and even years without stopping to question our direction. This. Is. Just. How. It. Is. Or so we tell ourselves. Still, every once in a while, a nagging feeling bubbles to this surface: could I go through this life differently? Could we all? Would this lead to greater happiness, more fulfilment or even a better world? The following is Esoterica’s take on this topic. We’d love to hear yours.
Honey, A Robot Took My Job but That’s OK!
Oh, technology! If I could remember to turn off my stove without using my iPhone, I would say it’s time to let you go. In this piece, we tackle the theme of how we could live in a post jobs world —and since our robot overlords have already busted down the door, perhaps it’s time to rethink what it means to be productive. If we’re lucky, maybe we can even rethink what it means to be a human being. Read our Big Idea piece here.
Did a Bank Teller Change Ontario’s Course on Basic Income?
A Hamilton bank teller whose job it was to cajole customers into adopting online banking (effectively making his job irrelevant) took the advice of country music balladeer Johnny Paycheck and told his boss to “take this job and shove it.” After calling it quits, he registered for Basic Income. Did this act strike fear in the province’s leadership? Read on.
