In this week’s episode, we speak with Jowita Bydlowska on her new novel, Possessed, about a women’s love obsession. The novel was inspired in part by a break up, according to the press material. Yet, the author corrects this idea, and explains that it tackles bad relationships in general — a universal theme that any reader should be able to relate to. Still, that didn’t stop an ex from thinking this novel was so much about him, he had his lawyers try to quash it.

Jowita is no stranger to controversy. A decade ago, she published her memoir, Drunk Mom, a best-selling book about being a new mother battling addiction that, at the time, shocked some readers in Canada. Meanwhile, other across the pond found it too tame. We discuss how the book would be received today. (Hint: very differently.)

Additionally, Jowita is the creator behind the Subtack “Unshame.” The theme of shame runs through her work. We highly recommend following it.
